Cognizant Classic 2024: PGA National Course Preview, Power Rankings & Key Players to Watch (2026)

The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches: A PGA TOUR Power Rankings Analysis

The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches is a highly anticipated event in the PGA TOUR calendar, attracting snowbirds from the northeastern US who flock to Florida for its mild winters. This year's tournament, the 20th edition, features a host of exciting renovations and challenges that will test the skills of the 123-strong field.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of new tees on the par-4 second and par-5 18th holes. The second hole, now 20 yards longer, can stretch to 484 yards, while the 18th hole has been extended by 36 yards, making it the longest hole on the course at 592 yards. These modifications have increased the course length to a record 7,223 yards, presenting a formidable challenge for players.

Despite the added length, the course still offers opportunities for scoring, particularly on the famous par-3-4-3 stretch between holes 15 and 17. Last year, the field averaged just 0.201 strokes over par in this stretch, and hole 17 averaged 2.969 for the week, the first time any of the three holes had come under par since the course's debut.

However, players must also contend with the overseeded rough, which has been increased to 3 inches, and the Bermudagrass greens, which are governed to 12 feet by the Stimpmeter. This means that length will play a significant role off the tee, and course management will be crucial, especially with water in play on almost every hole.

The Cognizant Classic is also a crucial event for securing exemptions and qualifying for other prestigious tournaments. The top finishers will gain valuable exemptions, and the field for THE PLAYERS Championship will be determined using the FedExCup ranking at the conclusion of the tournament. With 103 automatic qualifiers for the field of 120 at TPC Sawgrass, and three golfers currently inside the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking projected to gain entry, the competition is fierce.
