In the world of baseball, it’s not always about size; sometimes, it’s all about skill and technique. Marco Dinges, standing at 5 feet 10 inches and weighing 195 pounds, may not catch your eye with his physical stature, but his performance at the plate tells a different story altogether.
Brewers’ assistant director of player development, Brenton Del Chiaro, enthusiastically praises Dinges, stating, "His bat speed is off the charts. It’s one of the best—if not the best—in our organization." This remarkable bat speed enables Dinges to hit powerful shots across the entire field, turning him into a formidable opponent for pitchers.
Drafted by the Brewers in the fourth round of the 2024 MLB Draft from Florida State University, the 22-year-old right-handed catcher made significant contributions during the 2025 season. He participated in 47 games as a catcher and served as a designated hitter (DH) in an additional 30 games. His batting statistics were impressive: he finished with a .300 average, a .416 on-base percentage, and a .514 slugging percentage, hitting 13 home runs between Low-A Carolina and High-A Wisconsin. Notably, he was among a select group of seven minor league catchers who achieved an OPS over .900 while making at least 300 plate appearances.
Dinges' offensive prowess is underscored by his impressive stats of a .300 batting average, 13 home runs, and 62 runs batted in, culminating in a combined OPS of .930 across 77 games in both Class A and High A leagues. However, injuries do play a role in sports, and for Dinges, a severely strained hamstring sidelined him for a considerable amount of time, impacting his performance late in the season. This injury also led to his early exit from the Arizona Fall League after just two games.
Opposing pitchers quickly recognized Dinges’ potential to inflict damage at the plate. Del Chiaro noted that during training, Dinges’ bat speed peaked at an impressive 85 mph, consistently maintaining around 75 mph during games—statistics that clearly indicate major league caliber capabilities.
Dinges has been honing his swing for quite some time. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, "I’ve always swung pretty violently. When I went to junior college, I was on the smaller side, but my swing remained the same. Once I developed more strength, the results began to manifest. I never struck out much, so I thought, ‘Why not go for it?’ That’s how I approached my hitting."
On the defensive side of the game, Dinges showcases a strong arm and athleticism typical of a catcher. However, there are areas for improvement, particularly in game-calling and pitch-framing skills, where gaining more actual game experience will be essential for his further development.
