Miguel Oliveira's WorldSBK Journey: A Realistic Outlook?
Former MotoGP star Miguel Oliveira has set his sights on the World Superbike Championship, but his expectations are grounded in reality. With a six-year MotoGP career behind him, including five race wins with KTM, one might expect a smooth transition to WorldSBK. However, Oliveira's recent comments suggest a more modest outlook.
On the first day of the Phillip Island test, Oliveira finished 11th, over a second behind Nicolo Bulega. This result, he believes, is a fair representation of his current capabilities. The Portuguese rider attributes this to the challenging preseason, with rain affecting two tests in January, including the Portimao test, which led BMW to relocate their team to Valencia for a track day.
"What can I expect with no preseason?" Oliveira rhetorically asked. "I need more experience and laps. The road ahead is upwards, and as long as we're making progress and understanding the bike, that's key."
But here's where it gets controversial: Oliveira's comments suggest a more conservative approach, especially considering his MotoGP background. Is he selling himself short, or is he being overly cautious? And this is the part most people miss: Oliveira's transition to WorldSBK is a significant shift, and adapting to a new bike and championship takes time.
On the bright side, Oliveira's first full dry day on World Superbike machinery since November was a positive experience. He finished ahead of his teammate, Danilo Petrucci, and felt he was making progress. "We tried to adapt my riding style and make setup changes to get comfortable. It was a helpful day to regain those November feelings."
