Start with what needs a home

In a compact flat, adding storage can become another form of clutter. Before buying a basket or shelf, notice where things collect during an ordinary week. Shoes may pile up by the door, towels may linger over chairs, and beach bags may end up on the floor. These are better clues than an empty corner: storage works best when it sits close to where an item is used or put down.

Sort belongings into three groups: things used most days, things used occasionally, and things you no longer need to keep. Give the first group the easiest-to-reach spaces. Put occasional items higher up or farther back, and let go of duplicates where you can. Leave some capacity unused. A cupboard packed to its edges is harder to manage, especially when guests arrive or plans change.

Make a simple landing spot for beach days

Sand and damp gear are easier to manage at the entrance than throughout the flat. A washable mat, a shallow tray for sandals and a few sturdy hooks can make a useful landing spot without taking over the room. If the entrance opens straight into the living area, choose a narrow arrangement that leaves the walkway clear. One hook per regular bag or hat may be more helpful than a crowded row of hooks.

Keep wet items separate from dry storage. Towels and swimwear need a chance to dry before they go into a basket or closed cupboard, where trapped moisture can cause musty smells. A folding drying rack can be put away between uses; a small open basket can hold dry beach gear ready for the next trip. Empty sand from bags before storing them, so the landing spot stays easy to clean.

Use furniture that earns its footprint

Every piece of furniture in a small room should justify the space it occupies. A bed with accessible drawers can hold spare linen, while a bench with storage may provide both seating and a home for shoes or games. Check that drawers and lids can open fully in the available space; storage that is awkward to reach is unlikely to stay organised. Where possible, use containers you already own before buying new ones to fit.

Closed storage can quiet a busy-looking room, but not everything needs to disappear behind a door. Keep frequently used books or a favourite bowl visible, and store less attractive supplies together. Matching every container is unnecessary. A few plain boxes or baskets in consistent sizes often look more settled than a mix of small organisers, and they are easier to move if you rearrange the flat.

Work with walls and overlooked spaces

When floor space is scarce, look upward selectively. A short shelf above a desk, hooks on the back of a suitable door, or a rail inside a cupboard can free a worktop without making the room feel crowded. Keep heavy or frequently used items within comfortable reach. If you rent, check what fixings are allowed and whether a shelf or hook is appropriate for the wall or door before installing it.

Under-bed space and the tops of wardrobes can hold occasional-use items, but they should not become places where forgotten things accumulate. Use containers that are easy to pull out and label them plainly. In coastal conditions, enclosed spaces may need occasional checks for dampness. Store fabrics clean and fully dry, avoid pressing boxes tightly against a wall, and make sure you can reach the area to clean it.

Keep the system light enough to maintain

The aim is not to find a container for every object. It is to make everyday tidying simple: bags return to hooks, sandals return to their tray, and spare linen goes back to one known place. If an area repeatedly overflows, consider whether it holds too much or sits too far from where the items are used. Changing a habit or reducing the number of items may help more than adding another unit.

A compact coastal flat benefits from clear surfaces and room to move, whether it is your everyday home or a weekend base. After living with a new arrangement for a few weeks, notice what you still leave out and what you never reach for. Adjust the storage around those patterns. The best result feels less like a perfectly organised display and more like a space that is easy to come home to.
